Germania

On 1 January 1900, Germany issued the first of what would be a long-running series of stamps of the Germania design. This set can be easily distinguished from later sets by the inscription “REICHSPOST”, unlike later “DEUTSCHES REICH” versions.

Though the stamps were officially valid beginning on 1 January 1900, several issues are known to have been used in late December 1899. These early uses command a substantial premium.

For assistance in identifying Germania issues, see the Germania Identification Aid.
