MSP No. 1 – SMS Vineta II

SMS Vineta II was a protected cruiser of the Kaiserliche Marine launched on 9 December 1897 and commissioned on 13 September 1899.

Upon her commissioning, SMS Vineta II was assigned to Amerikanische Station, the location from which she became philatelically famous for creation of the Vineta Provisional.

She served there until 1905, when she returned to Germany via West Africa.  It was during this homeward voyage that she briefly stopped in Deutsch-Südwestafrika, Kamerun, and Togo, resulting in the only use of the MSP No. 1 postmark in those locations.

She became a training ship upon her return to Germany, and served in that capacity until the outbreak of World War I.  She was briefly mobilized as part of V Scouting Group, but her service in this role was brief.  By 1915, she was being used as a barracks ship, and she was eventually scrapped in 1920.
