1908 “Centimes” Germania Overprints
During this period, mailings of printed matter and merchandise from the Ottoman Empire to Europe were particularly heavy. However, due to currency rate conversion differences, it was more expensive to mail these items using the Reichspost than the postal systems of other European powers with a presence in Turkey. In an effort to remedy this loss of potential income, the Reichspost issued these stamps valued in French Centimes. They could be purchased using French currency.

In 1902, the Reichsdruckerei (Reich Printing Office) began printing in the margins of stamp sheets the internal order number under which the stamps were printed.  This order number, or Hausauftragsnummer (HAN), varied in location, typically being found in the right or bottom margin.

Because the stamps of this set were overprinted, they can be found with two HAN – the HAN of the original printing order for the underlying Germania issues (HAN U), and the HAN of the order applying the overprint (HAN A).
