Railway Postage-Free Labels

Offices of the German railway (Eisenbahn) were exempt from paying postage on official railway mail. To denote official railway main, labels were distributed to the OPD districts and Post Offices. These labels were to be affixed to all official railway mail accompanied by a notation of the postage amount. The total amounts were balanced monthly with the railway administration. The standard design was a 3-line label with the text "Frei laut Entschädigungs-Conto" (Free according to the compensation account).

Some postal departments were given the authority to print their own labels for the railway companies in their district.  The reason for this is not yet known.  These locally-produced labels are similar to the standard design, but differ slightly in text, font, or format.
