MSP No. 26 – SMS Möwe II

SMS Möwe II was a survey ship of the Kaiserliche Marine launched on 2 July 1906 and commissioned on 12 March 1907.

Upon commissioning, SMS Möwe II performed survey duties in the North Sea and Baltic Sea before embarking on what would be her primary duty, surveying coastlines in and around Germany’s colonies.  She surveyed the coasts of West Africa before arriving off German East Africa in February 1913.

She performed survey duties in East Africa until the outbreak of World War I.  On 8 August 1914, she was scuttled off Daressalam by her crew to prevent capture by the British.  Her crew and her salvaged guns would see continued service in the East African Campaign as ground forces and on Lake Tanganyika.
