Coastal Steamers
In late 1889, the German government authorized the coastal steamer Eloby of the Woermann-Linie to provide a local service carrying mail from smaller coastal towns to ports where the larger Woermann-Linie ships called. A canceller was sent to Kamerun, but the Eloby had been removed from service before it arrived.
Form 1904 to 1914, two local coastal steamers, Nachtigal and Herzogin Elisabeth, were used to transport mail from coastal locations without a post office to the first port of call with a post office.
Items collected by these vessels received a manuscript cancel with the name of the ship, and sometimes a subsequent post office transit cancel. The manuscript cancels vary greatly in format and style.
