Third Reich Postal Stationery - Lernt Deutschland kennen! Postcards

Lernt Deutschland kennen! (P236 39-142-1-)

The “Lernt Deutschland kennen!” (Get to Know Germany!) cards were issued over a span of 30+ years. Each card featured a scenic German picture on the left side. Any German town could order the cards and choose the view, provided they ordered at least 50,000 cards. For this reason, hundreds of different varieties exist. The printing codes (ex. 34-49-1-B7) denote the year (34), series (49), cylinder or plate number (1), and the view identifier (B7).

The P236 “Lernt Deutschland kennen!” is the largest series issued during the Third Reich period. A total of 1,218 different P236 cards were issued in over 120 printing series, beginning with 34-53-1- in 1934, and culminating with 41-183-1- in 1941.

The cards of the 39-142-1- printing series differ from the standard P236 design by featuring the slogan “Besucht das schöne Schlesien!” (Visit the Beautiful Silesia) instead of the usual “Lernt Deutschland kennen!”

The cards depict:

  • B1 — Breslau sports field
  • B2 — Sand Island, Breslau
  • B3 — Centennial Hall, Breslau
  • B4 — Cathedral, Breslau
  • B5 — Town Hall, Breslau
  • B6 — Reinerz health resort
  • B7 — Weißwasser
  • B8 — Beuthen
